Evolution of coverage | Hurricane Ida

HOUMA, La. — Hurricane season is here and the United States got its first hit of a major hurricane for the 2021 Season.

The Content Creators team deployed to Hurricane Ida this season with our truck loaded for the weeklong coverage for Weather Nation.

Our first story started in Lake Charles where we covered the anniversary of Hurricane Laura.

We ended Day 1 (Aug. 28th) in Baton Rouge and helped the network with Louisiana John Bel Edwards’ press conference and interviewed volunteers on Day 2(Aug. 29th).

After Ida made landfall, getting out of Baton Rouge was going to be a challenge.

We were assigned to find damage and report back.

With no cell phone coverage, we routed ourselves to Houma, Louisiana and filed our report.

With New Orleans completely without power—our only hotel room was in D’Iberville, Mississippi on Monday night.

It felt like we were going to be completely out of the coverage mix because we were so far away, but right down the street–the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron was returning home from San Antonio. All 10 C-130s used for hunting hurricanes had to be evacuated from Kessler Airforce Base in Biloxi, Mississippi due to Hurricane Ida.
